The Three Parts of the Ear

Your ear is composed of three parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. The outer ear collects and funnels sound down the ear canal. At the end of this canal is your tympanic membrane, also known as your eardrum. The eardrum is what separates the outer and middle ear.

When sound reaches the eardrum, it moves and vibrates against three of the smallest bones in the body, which make up the ossicular chain. The last bone in the chain is what transfers the mechanical energy to your inner ear. The inner ear consists of the cochlea and auditory nerve.

Energy stimulates a fluid inside the cochlea that stimulates hair cells, which then send the message to the nerve, which sends to the brain.
